About Zain South Sudan:
In July 2011, the Republic of South Sudan was revealed to the world. Before this momentous occasion, Zain was present and operating in South Sudan, investing heavily into network infrastructure and providing much needed voice and data services across many parts of the country. Today, Zain operates in South Sudan under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the South Sudan government, awaiting an official operating license. As an independent country, the population of South Sudan stands at approximately 10 million inhabitants, with prepaid customers dominating the telecom market and accounting for around 99% of the country’s overall customer base. Through huge investments and constant development of the telecommunication infrastructure, Zain remains committed to offering customers in South Sudan the widest coverage across the country matched with the most dynamic products and services.
Today, Zain South Sudan is supported by over 300 third generation (3G) voice and data enabled network sites. The technology being deployed nationwide can easily be upgraded to super-fast 4G LTE. Providing high-quality voice and faster internet access across many parts of the country, reflects Zain’s commitment to spreading its wonderful world, playing a critical role in the economic and social advancement of this promising country.
Empowering communities through telecommunications:
Across all of its markets of operation, Zain is focused on fostering close ties through many sustainable contributions it makes to the communities it serves and South Sudan is no exception.
Capacity building is one of the main strategic thrusts of Zain South Sudan and through the telecommunications, the company is focusing on empowering South Sudanese youth with the necessary skills to develop a more productive future in their chosen fields.
In 2013, Zain South Sudan embarked in a meaningful three year partnership with the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative (WPDI), Ericsson and UNESCO with the aim of establishing a Youth Peacemaker Network (YPN) comprised of youth from the 11 states in South Sudan. The network brought together young people who are motivated to be youth leaders in peace building as agents of positive change. The program aims to develop youth's capacity building needed for reconciliation, peace building and to equip them with the social and technical competencies necessary to mitigate conflict within their communities.
In June 2014 the YPN was expanded to South Sudan’s Equatorias region. The expansion to the Equatorias region is a continuation of WPDI’s five-year commitment to the region. Through telecommunications, Zain and its partners are all jointly focused on narrowing the digital divide, capacity building and empowering the South Sudanese youth with the necessary skills to develop a more productive future.
Also, Zain South Sudan is working closely with the Vodafone Foundation Instant Network to provide support to UNHCR in the support in Yida refugee camp. Currently in addition to the UNHCR and other aid agencies there are about 70,000 refugees in Yida who have no access to telecommunication services. The Foundation’s unit will be in place for a period of 6 months that will be linked to Zain South Sudan's core network, who will continue to provide telecommunication services beyond the 6 months period. In addition to the connectivity, Zain will provide a pool of free airtime (voice, SMS and data) for UNHCR refugees and other vulnerable groups.
In addition to the above, our outreach programs range from support to primary schools by providing them with sports equipment and computers. We are also trying to assist in health community drives by giving mosquito nets and bed sheets, an essential Malaria preventive method.
In a smaller but equally important scale, Zain South Sudan has also invested in sports and cultural programs as a means of bringing people together. During 2012, the company supported a football league comprised of 19 local teams in the city of Yei as well as Zain South Sudan sponsoring a cultural event in Wau in Western Bhar Al Ghazal where all 10 states were represented.
Through telecommunications and other means, Zain South Sudan will continue to concentrate its sustainable and responsible activities in programs that help in the socio-economic and human development of the people of South Sudan.
